The Next Pop Star You’re Going To Hate Yourself For Liking Was Charming On ‘Fallon’ Last Night

Every Disney princess’ younger sister Ariana Grande was so unimpressive at the VMAs last month that I didn’t mind making an equally terrible “I prefer Ariana Venti” joke on Twitter. She wasn’t worth the effort. Little did I know that she’s on the verge of mega-pop stardom, and that she’s actually a technically sound singer. Via Vulture:

Are you sure that’s her and not Mariah Carey singing on [Ariana’s hit song] “The Way”?

Yes, though you are not the first person to ask that question. Basically every review of the song and/or Yours Truly invokes Mimi, which is easy to understand once Ariana starts doing the crazy-high melismas.

Can she sing as high as Mariah?

No. But she has a four-octave range and goes all the way to E7, which is not too shabby. (Via)

Grande’s a Broadway kid, naturally, and she also starred in Nickelodeon’s Victorious and Sam & Cat and sort of resembles Emmy Rossum (not a bad thing). Now that she’s released her debut album, which came out this week, she’s all your girl cousins can gab about, so you might as well accept her into your life and be glad she’s not Ke$ha. Last night on Late Night, Grande performed Broadway versions of pop songs with Jimmy Fallon, and the whole thing’s a lot more tolerable than it sounds. It’s no Mariah with the Roots, but what is?
