Patrick Dempsey Agrees That He Outstayed His Welcome On ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy, also known as Oh My God That Show Is Still Going Strong?: Medical Edition, are still mourning the loss of McDreamy. While they should have known that no couples are allowed to stay happy/alive on the ABC drama, the sting that the central couple would not have their happily ever after left many devastated. However, one of those people is not Dr. Derek Shepherd himself, Patrick Dempsey.

“I think after a certain period of time, no matter how much money you make, you want control out of your own schedule,” Dempsey told People about leaving behind the television to focus on other projects, including the upcoming Bridget Jones’s Baby. While McDreamy made it clear that he was grateful for the opportunities Grey’s Anatomy gave him, he and creator Shonda Rhimes knew that his time on the show had an expiration date.

“It had been long enough. It was time for me to move on with other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a couple of years earlier. I stayed a bit longer than I should have… It was clear we were both ready. But we kept it very quiet. I knew he was going to be gone, but I didn’t know how she was going to handle it. Shonda just said, ‘I’m going to do it in a really good way,’ and she did her thing.”

Dempsey called McDreamy’s death “beautifully symbolic,” but something tells me that a lot of heartbroken fans don’t see it in such positive terms.
