One Mystery About Arseface Is Solved In This Exclusive Clip From ‘Preacher’

Some fans of Garth Ennis’ Preacher comic series have felt some frustration that the AMC series has been slow to connect the characters from the television series to the storylines in the comics. It’s important to remember a few things, however. First, Dominic Cooper — who plays Jesse Custer — has suggested that the first season of Preacher acts as something of an origins story for the comics, so that the season finale will end around where the comic series begins. Second, showrunner Sam Catlin has teased in the past that the iconic moments from the comics will eventually make it into the series, but viewers may need to show some patience.

That patience will start to pay off soon. This Sunday night’s episode, “South Will Rise Again,” will begin to draw several more connections between the series and the comics, and there are a couple of moments in the episode that comic readers will recognize. It’s also the best episode of the series since the pilot.

AMC has provided us an exclusive clip from Sunday night’s episode, and if you’ve been paying close attention to the series so far, this clip should provide clues to a couple of mysteries surrounding Eugene “Arseface” Root, namely: What provoked his suicide attempt, and why several of the townspeople consider him a “murderer.” The answer to those questions is intimated in the exchange between Jesse and Arseface.

The fifth episode of Preacher‘s first season, “South Will Rise Again” — written by Craig Rosenberg and directed by Michael Slovis — will air this Sunday night at 9 p.m. Eastern. The episode will also feature the return of The Cowboy.
