River Song Is Going To Return To ‘Doctor Who’

It seemed as though it was improbable, but River Song (and actress Alex Kingston) is returning to Doctor Who for this year’s Christmas Special, wherein River will meet Peter Capaldi’s version of The Doctor for the first time, this according to BBC America, who sent out an early morning press release with no real details about the episode’s synopsis.

Spoilers…

One of Doctor Who‘s most wibbly wobbly characters, in terms of her timeline, River was brought back from the dead and stored in a hard drive, like a music collection by David Tennant’s version of The Doctor. River had most of her fun galavanting with Matt Smith’s version of the character, as well as his companions, Rory and Amy Pond, her inexplicable parents. Later, River wound up marrying The Doctor after almost killing him, and then she consoled him when he lost Amy and Rory. Will River help The Doctor through the loss of another companion? It feels like only yesterday when we first met Clara, but in, Doctor Who years, it’s been an eternit,y and Christmas seems like the appropriate time for show producer Steven Moffat to make such a change, though that’s just wild speculation on my part.

Regardless, the return of River — who last appeared in the season seven episode, “The Name of The Doctor” on Trenzalore — is cause for celebration (her playful nature and Capaldi’s sometimes brusk, but also acid-tongued Doctor should make for a pretty enjoyable pair to watch) and consideration because, if it ain’t Clara’s last dance, something epic is going on if Song is being brought back.
