‘Riverdale’ Lands A Classic Teen Movie Star

Riverdale is basically mashing up Archie with Twin Peaks to create a murder mystery with some unusual touches if you only know the gang at Pop’s from the comic book Double Digests. Archie has broken it off with Ms. Grundy, Jason Blossom is brutally murdered, and a very familiar actress is now Archie’s mom.

Just announced by Entertainment Weekly, Ringwald, best known to mainstream audiences for her John Hughes movies, is taking on the job of Mary Andrews. Since everything has been changed up, Mary has ditched Archie and his dad Fred a few years before the show starts to follow some unspecified dreams, and is now coming back since her son needs her help. She’ll also apparently reform bonds with her high school friends, since Riverdale is apparently a place where murder exists, but awkward conversations about “Oh, what have you been up to?” don’t. Come to think of it, though, we want to go there. The occasional violent death is a small price to pay for never having to explain your job to somebody at a high school reunion.

Anyway, it’s the latest twist from the show. Riverdale is making a bid to shake up people’s perceptions of Archie comics, and it’ll be curious to see how people react. We’ll find out January 26th.
