Seth Meyers Takes ‘A Closer Look’ At The RNC’s Rocky Start

Late night hosts were going to have a field day with the Republican National Convention no matter the outcome, but thanks to Scott Baio: Political Commentator and The Great Melania Trump Speech Scandal, it’s as if the GOP was wanting to lend chat show comedians a hand. Naturally, folks like Seth Meyers were more than happy to take them up on the offer.

On Tuesday’s edition of Late Night, the early proceedings at the RNC were placed under Meyers’ microscope in the latest edition of “A Closer Look.” Benefiting from such nice fat softballs as the Republican Party’s simmering inter-party strife, Donald Trump’s surreal entrance and Michelle Obama’s words making an unexpected appearance, the Weekend Update alum served up a hilarious vivisection of the gaffes that have gone on so far.

“Trump beamed down from his spaceship to greet the people of Earth,” said Meyers on Trump’s Trumpian way of hitting the stage. “It should be noted, Trump entering the convention to a song by Queen is like starting a KKK rally with ‘Straight Outta Compton.'”

Meyers (who is far from beloved by his former network teammate Trump) had a lot of fun mocking the RNC’s early misfires and unusual choices, but the Late Night host still placed emphasis on the significance of the mistakes. Melania jacking part of the current First Lady’s speech is about more than just theft in his eyes.

“The plagiarism itself isn’t the big issue, the real issue here is that Trump claims to be a great president because he’s a great manager because he hires the best people,” argued Meyers. “A dumb mistake like a plagiarized speech at a convention undercuts that. I mean, after all, Trump has assured us: ‘I know words, I have the best words.’ It’s true. He has the best words and now we know where he gets them from.”

For all the moaning about Jon Stewart being out of the late night game (well, mostly), talents like Seth Meyers, Samantha Bee and Stephen Colbert have been doing some incredible work this election season.
