Kurt Sutter Is Developing A ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spin-Off, And It Will Revolve Around The Mayans

Even before Sons of Anarchy finished its seven-season run, speculation of some sort of spin-off or prequel ran rampant. The predominant rumor, which has been confirmed by Kurt Sutter, is that a prequel could eventually happen. Sutter stressed that he needed to put some space between SOA‘s ending and any continuation of the story, but this didn’t stop curious minds from speculating of what a prequel could look like (it would almost certainly head back to the 1960s when SAMCRO started to form).

In early August, Sutter said he was still “interested” in a prequel, but that it wouldn’t happen until he was finished with The Bastard Executioner, which could be a very long time to wait. This muted disappointment set the stage for a surprise announcement that just dropped. Sutter is developing an SOA spin-off that will revolve around The Mayans Motorcycle Club:

For the time being, Sutter is keeping mum on details, so questions remain about the time period and the potential for Sons’ stars to return. On Sons, the Mayans were positioned as a rival California motorcycle club, comprising mostly Mexican-Americans in the heroin distribution business. The Oakland charter, led by president Marcus Alvarez (played by Emilio Rivera), began the series as SAMCRO’s adversary. But as time went on, SAMCRO built up a tenuous working relationship with the Mayans, both as business partners and partners in crime and turf wars.

Details are still murky, and Sutter ain’t saying much, but this is exciting news. The spin-off is still in a “potential” stage, and god only knows where Sutter will find the time to prep this series, let alone step into writing. We can only speculate whether this spin-off would pick up where SOA left off or take place in the past. There are advantages to both. If the series heads into the past, we could see much more about Nero’s backstory. But if Sutter chooses to set the spin-off in present time, we could see a return for some of the characters who made it out of SOA alive.

Either way, let’s ride.
