‘The Tick’ Will Be Played By Peter Serafinowicz, The British Actor Who’s In All Your Favorite Movies

Earlier this month, we learned that The Tick is returning to serve up another potent dose of blue justice in a new live-action Amazon series. Just one catch — the ideally-cast Patrick Warburton, who played the Tick in the short-lived 2001 version of the show, will not be returning as the slightly insane title character.

Well, as of today we know British actor Peter Serafinowicz will be taking over the Tick’s nightly rooftop patrols. Wait, who? Most people were probably expecting a more recognizable comedian to take on the part, but Serafinowicz is one of those hard-working actors has been around forever. Unless you’re British, you may not know his name, but you probably know his face, and you definitely know his voice.

I mention his voice, because Serafinowicz’s first major role was providing the voice for Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Since then, Serafinowicz’s distinctively rugged face has shown up in a lot of fan-favorite flicks, including Shaun of the Dead, Grindhouse, Run Fatboy Run and Guardians of the Galaxy. Recently, Serafinowicz had a bit of a star turn in Spy, as the very horny, very Italian agent Aldo. I’m guessing his eternal, slightly delusional pursuit of Melissa McCarthy in Spy may have convinced the producers of The Tick that he could be an eternal, slightly delusional pursuer of justice.

The Tick will be written and executive produced by original creator Ben Edlund, with Patrick Warburton on board as a producer. Wally Pfister, the cinematographer for the Dark Knight trilogy, will be directing the pilot, so expect this silly superhero world to look surprisingly respectable.

No word yet on when The Tick will debut, but it seems like the fight against evil is ramping up quickly.
