Tom Hanks’s ‘Full House’ Slam Poem Begs The Question: Is He The Next Christopher Walken?

Ostensibly there to promote his new film, Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks also appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night to read a slam poem about the late, great Full House. Name another 1990s sitcom that was brave enough to have a whacky neighbor. YOU CAN’T. The poetry reading is great, Tom Hanks is awesome, all-black turtlenecks are fantastic, etc. etc. etc., but around the time Hanks asked, “Three men raising three girls, or are the girls raising them?,” I got to thinking: is he the next Christopher Walken?

Not the “new” Walken, because there can never be another Christopher Walken, but in a slightly less creepy way, lately Hanks has been embracing a weird version of himself, in a way no other actor has really attempted to, other than Walken (and maybe Adam West). There were, of course, the drunk and the Emmy-on-a-car photos, as well as Hanks playing a serial killer robot who tries to cop a feel of Vanessa Bayer’s boobs on SNL, and now this: a slam poem about Full House, not unlike Walken reading passages from Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

I guess what I’m saying is: I want to hang out with Christopher Walken and Tom Hanks.
