ABC And ‘The Bachelorette’ Are In Hot Water Over A Contestant’s Transphobic Statement

The new season of The Bachelorette begins on Monday, and as is usually the case, the skeletons are coming out of the contestant’s closets already. Earlier this week, the profiles of the men who will compete for the heart of Rachel Lindsay were posted, and it soon became clear that firefighter Bryce may want to consider his answers a bit more before answering. When asked what his biggest date fear was, he replied “that the chick is actually a dude.”

That bit of his profile was quickly scrubbed by ABC, who made a statement to The Wrap saying “This comment does not reflect the views of ABC, Warner Horizon or bachelorette Rachel Lindsay. We have removed it from ABC.com.” However, the damage was already done, as Twitter had taken notice of the gross bit of transphobia.

Listen, no one is looking to The Bachelorette for progressive politics (although the network is certainly working the diversity angle this season) nor are most of the meatheads on the show particularly thoughtful, but Bryce appears to be missing a sensitivity chip. We’ll see if he makes it to the Fantasy Suite or if he gets sent home the first night. Hopefully it’s the latter.
