Donald Glover is an unabashed hipster. He makes no bones about his love of the world of big glasses and Wire references. He loves the culture so much that he made a short film taking you through a day of his life full of all the hipster tropes that make the world go around.
For example…
— Big glasses
— Statue from India
— Landlines
— Nifty weed-smoking gadgets
— Karate
— Piano-playing
— Long-sleeve shirts and shorts
— Rappers people like ironically (Trinidad Jame$)
— Connect Four
— Learning how to DJ
— Chicks we had crushes on from the 90s (Tapanga)
— Picking fresh fruit
— campfires
Also, things get disgusting. There’s a bloody nose and a really long, uncomfortable scene of yanking a gold tooth out of it.
And, here’s the most hipster aspect of the whole film: I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON. Thanks, Donnie Darko.
I want to live in that house with all those beautiful people
While I love and respect Glover, the idea of “hipster pride”, even as a hypothetical, makes me want to go on a shooting spree.
Yes, because if there is anything we need more of it’s intolerance By now I would assume everyone would like all the same things, and if they don’t, the people who like things we don’t like should have the decency to be quiet about it. Let’s go on a shooting spree, that solves everything!
You can accept that people or things you don’t like exist, but that doesn’t mean you have to be happy about it.
Man, Arcade Fire Fans take shit really seriously.
Tell me more about the pornstar who broke a mans penis on camera.
She can brake my penis any day (without seeing that link yet).
My new rapper name: Va$ DEF-renz
I thought that the whole film had a very melancholy undertone to it. According to Donald, it was dedicated to a friend of his that died last year. Don’t know if this entire project was the result of that death, but given the tone, I wouldn’t be surprised by it.
I’m not sure that I understand the symbolism of the gold tooth. Are we to interpret that Donald is trying to exorcise himself of the deep-seated desires for such trivialities?
The on-the-nose message of “every day is the same” would seem to indicate that Donald has grown weary of his lifestyle, but then again, he’s off starting a new sitcom, so that hardly seems appropriate if you’re feeling burned out.
On the whole, I liked it. Even if I didn’t understand it fully. Also, he wasn’t “learning to DJ”. Donald has been DJ’ing for years.
EVERYTHING IS HIPSTER- WE HATE EVERYTHING
Wait…we only ironically like Trinidad James?
Landlines and campfires are hipster? My Grandpa is the king of hipsters then.
Well he is vintage.
Wire references are hipster? Did I miss a meeting?
Depends on the phrasing.
Endless references to hipsters = a culture journalist who has absolutely nothing interesting to say about the subject.
You realize it’s possible to like something based on its merits and not as an ironic signifier? Do you actually know anyone who devotes their time and attention to something out of irony? Do these people or exist or are they a villainous construction created to make the rest of us feel better about ourselves?
Also I didn’t realize people could have poor eyesight ironically.
Wow, the youtube comments were more adult than the one on here.. you guys are slipping
