Weekend Preview: Two Hours Of Awesome Commercials (Also, A Football Game)

Super Bowl XLVIII (Fox, Sunday 6 p.m.) — You want to watch the commercials before they air? We’ve got you covered. Here’s the Doritos commercials you won’t see. Read this and drop some Super Bowl commercial trivia at your Super Bowl party. Here’s a prediction, here’s Peyton Manning throwing ducks, and no matter what happens on Sunday night, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan have already won the Super Bowl.

New Girl/Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox, Sunday 10:30ish) — Yes, Prince will be there, but even better, Nick and Winston dress up as Prince. And yes, it is fabulous. And while I’me excited to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine in such a great timeslot, I’m not as excited to see Adam Sandler on it.

Sherlock (PBS, Sunday 10 p.m.) — It’s just downright cruel to air this against the Super Bowl. Wait until the next day and risk having it spoiled? Or stay up late to catch it? Who are you kidding? You’ll be too blitzed after the Super Bowl to watch Sherlock. I understand, however, that if you watch Sherlock’s drunk scene in last week’s episode while you’re drunk, everything that was blurry will suddenly become clear, and all the plot holes in that episode will make perfect sense.

Shameless (Showtime, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Another cruelty perpetuated by Showtime, airing this against the Super Bowl, and I still haven’t gotten over the final season of Dexter. This is such a Harrison move.

Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday 11:30 p.m.) — It’s not only Seth Meyers’ last show as anchor of Weekend Update, but Melissa McCarthy is hosting. Want to see the best two-minute scene of her career. Here you go. Never gets old.

Black Sails (Starz, Saturday 9 p.m.) — It was the highest rated show ever or something for Starz in its premiere last week, although I didn’t watch after Sepinwall crapped all over it. That Sepinwall wields some power.

Grimm/Dracula (NBC, Friday 9 p.m.) — You can’t really call them “winter premieres” when they’ve only been gone a few weeks, can you?
