Los Suns Oppose Arizona’s SB 1070 Law

By / 05.04.10

These are the kinds of things that should be highlighted in sports. In a bold move of support against Arizona’s SB 1970, the Phoenix Suns will wear their “Los Suns” jerseys on Wednesday (coincidentally it’s Cinco De Mayo too) for Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, according to Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver.

“Our players and organization felt that wearing our “Los Suns” jerseys on Cinco de Mayo was a way for our team and our organization to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the State of Arizona, and our nation. We are proud that 400 players from 36 countries compete in the NBA, and the league and the Suns have always considered that to be a great strength of the NBA.”

“The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law. However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.” [AZ Central]

Steve Nash chimed in by calling the law “misguided” and it looks as if the players are in support. No, this isn’t John Carlos and Tommie Smith sock-footed, black gloves @ the Olympic medal stand. But this isn’t just any mid-season game but a playoff game with a large viewing audience watching. Hopefully, a few of those in attendance and watching are check-writers for corporations who follow the Suns’ lead.
