Oklahoma City Thunder’s chances for a title took a strong hit with Friday’s injury report. CBS Sports’ Royce Young reports that the Thunder will be without their spirited point guard, who suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery. At the moment, the team has no timetable for Westbrook’s return.
The team says Westbrook suffered his injury the second quarter of Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Rockets. The injury comes as a blow not just for the team but for scrappy guard, who notably has never missed a game in his career spanning through high school, college and the pros.
For those who were watching, the second was when Westbrook and Rockets guard Patrick Beverley collided, which led to a later debate between TNT’s Inside The NBA team as to whether the play was dirty or not. At the time, Charles Barkley, one of those who considered the play a cheap shot, mentioned that a player could get hurt in that situation.
Who knew Chuck’s words of caution would come to fruition in the worst possible way to set an example.
Update: KD spoke with reporters today about his Russy’s injury and the effect it will have on the team. When asked how he plans to adjust to Westbrook’s absence, KD said, “I know I have to do a better job being a better leader on the floor. Maybe doing some of the stuff he was doing for us.”
