The best present you received on Valentine’s Day didn’t come from your wife or husband — it came from yourself, when you downloaded De La Soul’s entire discography for free. The rap group’s music isn’t otherwise available online, due to licensing issues with Warner Music Group, so this was the first time 3 Feet High and Rising could be heard, at least legally. Well, sort of.
A quick look at the metadata on the files the band distributed on Friday seems to indicate that many of them came from Rappalata, a Russian pirate site. That’s not conclusive evidence. But it suggests that De La Soul got its digital files the same way anyone else gets digital De La Soul files these days — from someone who doesn’t have the rights to distribute them. (Via)
In other words, you have a Russian teen named Evpraksiya Yolkinvodka to thank for Buhloone Mindstate.
