The year was 1997. The No. 1 song on the Billboard charts was Elton John’s updated “Candle in the Wind,” while James Cameron’s Titanic cruised to $600 million at the box office at a time that such a number was unheard of. On television, the world said goodbye to the raunchy humor of Married with Children, while it said hello to the raunchier humor of South Park. Meanwhile, the TV comedy institution known as Saturday Night Live was emerging from the dark age of the 1994-95 season behind the talents of then-unknown comedians like Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon, as well as a writer named Tina Fey. It was during that season that Chris Kattan introduced the world to a character named Mango.
Despite the fact that this was 17 years ago and Mango made his last appearance on SNL in 2002, some people, namely designer Alexander Wang, think that the one thing this world needs more of is the Mango. Kattan arrived at the 2014 CFDA fashion awards in New York City yesterday in full costume, but despite the obvious assumption that Kattan is popping pills again or just batsh*t crazy, it was all because Wang wanted the character in this new video.
