Deryck Whibley is finally completely free of Avril Lavigne, as a judge granted his name change to drop the “Lavigne” from his last name. Oh yeah, because in related news: Deryck Whibley legally changed his name to Deryck Lavigne Whibley after he and Avril Lavinge got married.
The rocker’s request to drop Avril’s name was stamped on Thursday. As we first revealed, Whibley had secretly taken her name during their 2006 marriage … to become Deryck Jason Lavigne Whibley. Deryck’s name change was filed a few months after Lavigne married Nickelback frontman Chad Kroger … which is probably not a coincidence. The fact Deryck has a new fiancée probably influenced the change too.
I knew a couple once who, after they got married, the groom wanted to take on the bride’s last name and drop his completely — just because he didn’t like his last name — and you’d be surprised how hard it actually is for a man to change his last name instead of vice versa. He ended up not doing it because of all the red tape involved, which was probably ultimately for the best because they ended up getting divorced a couple of years later.
Whereas when I changed my last name pretty much all I had to do was go to the social security office downtown and fill out, like, half a page of paperwork. It seriously took like five minutes, and then: Boom! New last name. Gender inequality, man. We live in an age where people can get gay married in almost half of the states in our country and a dude still can’t take on or drop his lady’s name without a metric sh*t ton of hassle.
Anyway, I kind of got off topic here, but let’s hope this is the first in a string of good decision making in Deryck Whibley’s new-found sobriety.
