Miguel – Art Dealer Chic Vol. 1

With emerging stars The Weeknd and Frank Ocean drawing most of the attention on the R&B front in 2011, the debut album from Miguel — released at the tail-end of 2010 — was predictably overlooked and underappreciated. By my own admission, it wasn’t until months after the LP’s release that my attention turned to All I Want Is You. By all accounts, it’s one of the better R&B releases of the past year and change, bolstered by radio smashes “All I Want is You” and “Sure Thing,” as well as impressive album cuts like “Girl With the Tattoo” and “Teach You.” On the heels of his solo success, Miguel then closed out 2011 by linking up with Wale on “Lotus Flower Bomb,” which has since gone on to become the biggest hit of the MMG rapper’s career.

Working off that built-up momentum, Miguel has laid out plans to drop a trio of mini releases in anticipation of his sophomore album due out later this year. The first set of songs, Art Dealer Chic Vol. 1, was released earlier this week and is a short encapsulation of Miguel’s fusion of traditional R&B with strong hip-hop, funk, and soul influences. The real gem of the batch is opening track “Adorn,” a sultry account of romantic devotion that is sure to warrant repeated spins, clocking in at just under two-and-a-half minutes.

If you’re wondering about the next installments in the Art Dealer Chic series, volumes two and three are set to drop on the 27th of March and April respectively.
