Five Games: ‘OlliOlli2’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully I’m here ever week to guide you through what’s happening with games.

As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Puzzle Platformer

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars (Wii U & 3DS, March 5)

Nintendo’s Lemmings-like Mario vs. Donkey Kong series returns this week. Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars will also be Nintendo’s first ever cross-buy title. Buy the game on the Wii U, and you can play it for free on the 3DS and vice versa. Hopefully, we see more of this in the future.

This Week’s Other Puzzle Platformer

Shiftlings (PC & PS4, March 3)

Shiftlings is a new puzzle platformer with a good, simple premise. You play as two aliens connected by a tether, and each alien can expand their spacesuit, allowing the other alien to use them as a bouncy platform. Shiftlings definitely has a look and feel of a classic ’90s puzzler, which actually sets it apart from all the artsy indie puzzle platformers on the market today. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Adventure/Horror Game

White Night (PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One & PS4, March 3)

The stylish White Night is a survival horror tribute to classic black and white noir cinema. We’ve seen plenty of noir-influenced adventure games, but for some reason, noir and horror don’t cross over often, so this should be a unique and hopefully successful combo. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Episodic Game

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – Episode 2 (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, March 3)

Having played through the first episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, I can say that the game has some issues, but it also has some high points, and I’m definitely still on board for Episode 2. Hopefully, this episode introduces some interesting plot twists, and it may focus more heavily on Barry, because his half of the game totally blows away the Claire half thus far.

Pick of the Week

OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood (PS4 & PS Vita, March 3)

The sequel to perhaps the most purely entertaining indie game of last year arrives! OlliOlli 2 delivers a somewhat more slick art style, more varied stages and of course, new tricks! There’s also a new combo system that will let you rack up mega points. Start exercising your thumbs now.

A good week for scary things and skateboarding! Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
