Joe Kubert Passes At 85

Joe Kubert, one of the most important men in comics, died yesterday at 85.

Kubert’s career spanned nearly his entire life. He got his start in the ’40s as a teenager and worked in comics until his death: He was currently contributing pencils on the Nite Owl miniseries.

Kubert worked as a freelancer for many companies (he claimed to have inked the first Archie story) but he was best known for his work at DC. He helped define Hawkman and Sgt. Rock and was the first artist on the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Outside of his work, he’s best known among comics fans for founding the Kubert School, the first educational institution dedicated to the art of drawing and inking comics.

The field has lost a giant. Our condolences go out to the Kubert family during this difficult time.
