Kendrick Lamar Talks Recording With Dr. Dre, New Album

No matter how many blogs, publications or radio shows anoint Kendrick Lamar rap’s next big thing, the greatest compliment came from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s approval. Last week, Dre and Lamar dropped “The Recipe” and in a recent interview with DJ Whoo Kid on Shade 45, K. Dot revealed that he and the Doctor have recorded around 30 tracks together, hinting that the former N.W.A. member is a bit more active on the boards than his oft-delayed Detox effort would indicate. “Man, I probably got about 30 records with Dre right now, man,” Lamar said to an enthusiastic Whoo Kid.

Push Detox out of your mind for a second; forget about all of the frustration that comes to mind whenever Dre’s next album gets brought up. From a purely technical standpoint, the thought of Dre putting all of his time – which he should have a lot of – and effort into an up-and-comer like Lamar is fantastic news. He’s been inactive for a while, but one doesn’t need to be reminded that Dre is Hip-Hop’s King Midas; seemingly everything he is directly involved with turns into gold. Rap fans have been used to living without a sequel to 2001 for years. Anything Dre brings to music this late in his career is just icing on the cake.

Could Lamar (and the rest of TDE) – one of Compton’s most talented prospects in years – have what it takes to awaken the legend from such a long hiatus? Let’s hope so; the thought K. Dot moving forward with a motivated Dre in his corner should be enough to make any Hip-Hop head salivate in anticipation.
