Meet The TV Newscast Director Whose Resignation Letter Was A Cake

The procedures required for resigning from a job are never fun, even if it’s a job you really don’t like. There’s paperwork to file, official lines of communication to use (i.e. endure), and loads of other poorly-placed stepping stones along the way. Despite all this, the process didn’t scare KOLD-TV Newscast Director Mark Herman, who decided to avoid any and all bittersweet goodbyes… literally.

Herman posted his resignation letter to Reddit a few days ago. Sure, you’d think a simple letter wouldn’t get too much attention, but Herman’s did. Why? Because it wasn’t actually a letter. It was a cake:

Jim Romenesko talked to Herman about the cake resignation and the reasoning behind it:

I knew they’d be disappointed in my departure. So I decided that I should resign via cake – not only because nobody can be mad or sad at a cake, but also because I’m a bit of a joker and a cake of resignation is pretty damn hilarious.

He’s not wrong. Quitting your job via cake is a humorous and heartfelt way to go. If you’re supposed to be watching your calories, it’s literally heartfelt. According to Herman, the resignation was composed of a simple white cake filled with strawberry and topped with whipped cream.

Yet, he didn’t mention the particular store or cake designer who grafted the letter’s formatting and content onto the cake top. This got me thinking… what if Herman’s cake artiste hadn’t been so good? He could have wound up with something very different.
