Obits: Above The Law’s KMG Dies

Sad day for gangster rap as one of the originators of the West Coast movement, KMG of Above The Law, passed away yesterday. Although their name may not ring bells today, the group went strong for 22 years and helped usher in the first wave of hardcore rap on a national level, following in the footsteps of N.W.A., Ice Cube, and Ice-T. Above The Law started their career as part of Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records, with their 1990 album Livin’ Like Hustlers. Both their debut and third album Black Mafia Life both garnered gold plaques.

In his honor, we go back to the title track from their debut, which happened to be one of the first bootleg casette tapes I ever purchased.
