Chiefs had nine first downs on their first two drives. Between the two, there was a Patriots three-and-out. With their second possession, Kansas City methodically took it down the field to notch the game’s first score with a Jamaal Charles two-yard touchdown run.

New England gets its first two first downs of the game on their second drive but it wass only enough to get them just past midfield as the second quarter began.

On Kansas City’s next play, Knile Davis broke off a 48-yard run. That set up a second Jamaal Charles, this time on a bubble screen from the 5. At that point, the Chiefs were averaging 8.3 yards per play.

The teams swapped possessions. With about three minutes to go, Tom Brady had an open lane to pick up a 3rd and 3 if he decided to actually run for once but instead launched a pass 20 yards downfield where it was broken up and the Pats were punting again.

That gave the Chiefs another shot at a scoring opportunity. Trademark terrible Andy Reid clock management nearly squandered it when the Chiefs completed a pass at the goal line with no timeouts. It would have ended the half but the Patriots were flagged for a hands to the face penalty, giving Kansas City a shot for a field goal, which they converted to make it 17-0 at half.
