Looks like Sony’s throwing the gauntlet down for their take on mash-up fighting games. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is Sony’s oft-rumored take on mascots beating each other up to bits. Old and new favorites like Sweet Tooth, Kratos and Parappa the Rapper have been revealed with more challengers on the way. Take a glance at the gameplay in the meantime and ask yourself if it looks like anything else on the market.
Yeah, about that…
A key reason why Smash Bros. “works” is because it features characters people have rocked with for generations with some choice selections for Nintendo neckbeards. Then its unique take on fighting brought fans by the millions. Sony has some memorable figures in their roster as well but their most popular ones don’t carry the same weight as Mario, Link and the like. The design choices from Joystiq’s reveal intend to dispel the obvious comparisons to Smash. Therefore, we’ll see if it’s considerably different or a blatant bite of the competition. I understand and practice the whole “don’t knock it ’til you try it” motto with games. So I won’t write it off just yet even if the similarities seemingly come to close for comfort. Yet, as a first look, Battle Royale appears to be a case of imitation being the best form of flattery.
