And what does the last New Comic Book Day of February bring us? An awful lot. Highlights, the full list, and reviews of books from DC, Image, and Dark Horse under the cut.
- DC wraps up Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan and we have a review of the final issue, kills off Damien Wayne in Batman Incorporated #8 and has more Aquaman, Flash, and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
- Marvel has more FF and Hawkeye, finishes the surprisingly good mini Punisher: War Zone, and starts the push for Guardians of the Galaxy in earnest with a book numbered as “0.1”.
- Image launches Five Weapons, about a kid stuck in a high school for assassins, and also “relaunches” Skullkickers as Uncanny Skullkickers. The cover is… memorable. There’s also more Witch Doctor, Prophet, and Comeback.
- Dark Horse launches Amala’s Blade, and has more Answer and Massive… all of which we’re reviewing.
- IDW wraps its Star Trek: The Next Generation mini, Hive, and has more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secret History Of The Foot Clan.
- And Boom! has more Deathmatch.
And now, the reviews!
Aquaman #17
Man, Geoff Johns just will not stop until everybody loves Aquaman. This book is largely serving as a jumping-on point, wrapping up the previous arc and sowing the seeds for the new one. Aquaman is now king of Atlantis, but the surface world is refusing to acknowledge Atlantis as a state, Atlanteans don’t trust their own king, Atlantean weapons are being sold on the black market, and even eco-heroes like the Sea Devils think Atlantis is dangerous. He can’t even bring his wife back with him.
It feels a bit forced to some degree, but it puts Aquaman in a pretty compelling situation: In power, in charge, but utterly isolated. Paul Pelletier on pencils and Sean Parsons on inks do a good job of conveying Aquaman’s rough edges here; he’s got a subtle degree of stubble throughout the book, for example.
All in all, considering how many people irrationally hate the guy, this book does a pretty good job of setting up compelling stories going forward.
Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #4
J. Michael Straczynski actually manages to wrap this book up by papering over a plot hole; where before Dr. Manhattan basically said he was all knowing, yet not, here we see that the real problem is that he’s all too human, and how the original book’s endgame plays into that in more ways than one. While it’s not crucial reading, it’s a solid book and Adam Hughes’ art is gorgeous on its own. It’s a solid finish and it ends on a surprisingly hopeful note, which, well, at least somebody deserves a happy ending.
Witch Doctor: Mal Practice #4
Brandon Seifert (who gave us a lovely interview yesterday) and Lukas Ketner continue their hilarious miniseries. This issue layers on plenty of complications, ranging from a tough moral choice from a cast member to a sad moment where we learn a lot more about Penny Dreadful. Seifert does a superb job with character and plot here; even monstrous siblings care about each other in a moment that’s somewhat touching.
Ketner, meanwhile, does some wonderful work with the art. Whether he uses a cutaway drawing to shift the focus of a scene or gets into micro-anatomy, it’s wonderful, creative work. If you haven’t been reading this book, now is most definitely the time to start picking it up.
Amala’s Blade #0
Cyborg pirates being attacked by a snarky ninja sounds like a trendy webcomic, but this Dark Horse book makes it work, by not winking. Steven Horton’s writing is set in a fully fleshed, fully thought-out universe that the book only alludes to, but makes clear there’s a whole history to both the protagonist and her world that we don’t quite know about yet. Michael Dialynas’ art has a distinct style halfway between manga and heavy metal.
That said, I hope Dialynas passes coloring chores off to someone else for the book proper. He doesn’t do a terrible job, but the palette he uses is a bit dark and murky, making his well-done action scenes feel a bit flatter than they should. But regardless, it’s a fun, well-rendered book, and we can’t wait for the ongoing proper.
Angel And Faith #19
Wrapping up the current arc, one of the best compliments you can pay to a book like this is that it feels like a good episode of the TV series it was based on. Christos Gage has a good grasp of the show’s characters and snappy dialogue, and Rebekah Isaacs works well within the restrictions she has, namely depicting actors properly.
And it wraps on a cliffhanger, like any good TV episode. If you like Buffy, you’ll likely enjoy this.
The Answer #2
Mike Norton and Dennis Hopeless work on this book like they’re trying to make each other crack up the entire time they put it together, and it shows. The Answer is a goofy book with more than a tinge of ’70s Marvel to it in terms of tone, meant in the best way possible, and it’s savvily written enough to stay compelling, no matter what.
Final Night #3
This Criminal Macabre/30 Days Of Night crossover reunites Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, which is nice and all, but these two books are so wrapped up in their own continuity, and so little context is provided, that it’s pretty hard to jump in if you haven’t been following along closely. Similarly, this is less a horror book than an action book with horror trappings; take 30 Days Of Night out of its Alaskan setting and this essentially becomes a Criminal Macabre miniseries. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but one wonders why this crossover was so necessary.
The Massive #9
We’ve praised this book before, and it’s only gotten better since then. What makes Brian Wood’s post-apocalypse story work is the fact that the apocalypse is just a fact of life for these characters. This issue puts some more complications in the way of the crew of the Kapital, and also discusses the history of Georg.
Meanwhile Garry Brown, as artist, and Dave Stewart, as colorist, do a good job of depicting roiling seas and angry people. They have a lot to do in the book from evoking the Russian steppes to imitating security footage, and it all looks good. This is a solid issue in a great ongoing series.
Star Wars: Agent Of The Empire: Hard Targets #5
Star Wars: Dawn of The Jedi: Prisoner of Bogan #3
John Ostrander has a long history as a comics writer, including a run in the ’90s on DC’s Spectre that gets far less appreciation than it deserves. But he’s probably best known for his work on Dark Horse’s Star Wars books, and with reason. Both of these books show off Ostrander’s grasp of the Star Wars universe and how he can tell different stories in it from wildly different perspectives. Hard Targets is a spy thriller, essentially, starring Boba Fett, while Prisoner of Bogan is a high fantasy story.
Both are killer reads: If you get a chance, pick them up.
