Texas Football Coach Mack Brown Will Reportedly Resign (Or Be Fired) By The End Of This Week

Ok, so Texas head football coach Mack Brown’s 2013 season will be his last, reportedly. According to a source, who spoke with ESPN, Brown, Texas president Bill Powers and Brown’s agent, Joe Jamail, have been discussing Brown’s future, in which they all amicably agreed that Brown would step down within the next couple of days.

ESPN’s source elaborated on the speedy timetable:

“I’d be real surprised if it hasn’t happened by Friday night with the [Texas] football banquet. I think it will be taken care of. It wouldn’t drag on much longer.”

Orangebloods.com first reported Brown’s resignation yesterday morning; however, Brown dismissed the story by saying that, “I’m in Florida recruiting. If I had decided to step down I sure wouldn’t be killing myself down here. I have not decided to step down.”

Despite Brown’s insistence that he’s not going anywhere, ESPN’s source is adamant that the Brown resignation news is true. He just doesn’t want people to get their news of his leaving from the internet, because duh.

“I know Mack, he’s a friend, this is his decision, but he wants to tell his players and staff and not read it on the Internet,” the source told ESPN. “That’s why he reacted strongly to the [Orangebloods.com] report.”

If the writing is indeed on the wall for Brown (and, surely, it is), Brown went 158-47 at Texas and won the 2005 National Championship. However, in his 16 seasons with the Longhorns, he can only count two outright Big 12 championship (although, his Longhorns squads did reach the Big 12 title game four additional times), not to mention he was only 7-9 in the Red River Rivalry against Texas’ main rival, Oklahoma. His 2013 squad miraculously finished the regular season 8-4 after a disastrous start, and will play Oregon on Dec. 30 in the Alamo Bowl.
