The Details: Nike Zoom Kobe VII Elite “Away”

The FedEx fairy came knocking again with the Zoom Kobe VII Elite System in hand. The ZKVII didn’t transcend the VIs as much as they took the “if it ain’t broke…” approach with the design and added a few tweaks. The Kobe Elites take things up a notch with a Pro Combat-inspired upper that feels as durable as Goodyears. The comfort and fit on them defintly rates slightly higher as well since the Kevlar-infused Flywire locks the foot down and the weight is dropped to a noticeable degree on all the Elites. Plus, Kevlar laces are always a nice defense if I ever get shot in the foot by a trigger-happy fool in the club.

The little homie says they’re ugly but not that I care since there’s tons of pairs in my closet that don’t appeal to others or are just plain awkward to the eye but that’s part of the draw to me. The split-toe design of Rifts, the side-tying approach of Footscapes and the scaley look of the last two Kobe models are eye-catching. Once you’ve been buying shoes for decades, it’s the design innovation and storylines behind the creation of different models that keep the over-accumulation of sneakers a passion. I’ve already waxed on why I favor the Elite Series as a whole and, from what I’ve seen, they made the mark from a critical perspective.

And, cool packaging helps so the continuation of the “Epic” theme emblazoned on gold is a rad touch. Thanks, Nike Basketball.
