The-Dream Feat. Casha – “Kill The Lights” Video

When it comes to the progression of The-Dream’s music, it’s not about wholesale change as much as minor tweaks and adjustments. Sometimes the differences between his new tracks and his older material are so minute that you can’t even pinpoint exactly what’s changed. But you know there’s something at work because The-Dream manages to captivate every time out. “Kill the Lights,” the newest offering from his upcoming album, LOVE IV MMXII, due out this summer, is no different. It’s another straight up love jam, a gracefully slow-moving record brightened by glowing synths and The-Dream’s impeccable sense of melody.

The video for the track is a straight-forward affair (exploding light bulbs, burning candles), perhaps serving partly as a reintroduction for Dream’s Radio Killa signee Casha (it took me viewing the video to realize that this was the same Casha from that one annoyingly catchy Yung Berg song). Aside from providing the clip with some eye candy, Casha proves a strong vocal complement to her label boss.

If there’s a shift at play here, it might be in the songwriting. Compared to The-Dream’s previous work–particularly the amusingly frank and sometimes curt lyricism of last year’s 1977–the lyrics on “Kill the Lights” are relatively restrained, expressing amorous feelings rather than resentment. While 1977 was no doubt a solid release (and a free one at that), “Kill the Lights” finds The-Dream more firmly in his comfort zone, reveling in his signature style.
