The Problem With ‘Terra Nova’: Boring Characters

There is a phenomenal scene in the beginning of Red Letter Media’s epic 70 minute review of “The Phantom Menace” where he asks people to describe Han Solo and Qui-Gon Jinn’s character without saying what they look like, the kind of costume they wore, what their profession is or what their role in the movie was. The idea being that the better they can describe a character, the stronger he or she is. I like to think of this as the Phantom Character challenge. For Han Solo it is easy! He’s a dashing rogue with and dark streak and a heart of gold. For Qui-Gon Jinn however, the challenge wasn’t so easy. The people surveyed were hard pressed to come up with any description besides “stern”.

Let’s try the Phantom Character challenge on “Terra Nova”, shall we? I have tried to describe these characters’ personalities. I challenge you to make them seem more interesting.

This is the best I could do. If you can do better try your hand in the comments.
