This Is What It Looks Like When They Dye The Chicago River Green For St. Patrick’s Day

Every year for over 50 years, a portion of the Chicago River has been dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day. A local plumber’s union dumps 40 pounds of an environmentally friendly powder into the water, churns it with boats and, voila!, or whatever the Irish way of saying “voila!” would be. This time-lapse video of the dye being applied is fascinating to watch — it looks like ectoplasm. It’s like watching an army of Slimers being released into the River North neighborhood via the water supply.
