This One Goes Out To Maurice Garland

The other day we posted the new Mayer Hawthorne video for “One Track Mind.” It garnered a few responses about the concept of the video and our man Mayer’s way with Soul.

And then Maurice commented. And he said what some of you may have thought when you saw this video, or when you heard a couple of his other singles…

yeah…I’m missing this train…still don’t know what the big deal about buddy is.

Beware came out and quickly responded with a link to another Mayer song, “Easy Lovin’,” defying Maurice not to enjoy it.

Now, I don’t know Mr. Garland personally. But if I were a betting woman (and I’m not, but let’s pretend,) I’d guess “Easy Lovin'” only pulled that train away from the station a little faster. “Easy Lovin'” is as up-tempo and poppy as “One Track Mind.” If you don’t like one, you won’t like the other.

No, I figure Maurice for another track altogether. A track that goes completely neglected when it comes to Mayer Hawthorne. “Shiny & New.”

Maybe it’s the tsssst of the hi-hat on the and, maybe it’s the drum breakdown into the chorus, maybe it’s the Quiet Storm two-step you feel from the outset, or maybe it’s just Mayer Hawthorne’s harmonies and conveyance of a butterfly-laden new love that we can all relate to. This song just does it, and does it right.

Personally, I think it’s the flute falls. In the words of Mayer himself, “Those flute falls get people pregnant.”

What I like about this song, and about Mayer in general, is that there’s something for everyone. Beware hears genius in “Easy Lovin’,” and I hear it in “Shiny & New.” Either way, his live show is something to witness — complete with a live band, dancing, panty-throwing, and a bunch of moist women who are ready to let those flute falls work their magic on any man standing near them by the end of the show.

So, Maurice, whether you like it or not, I dedicate to you “Shiny & New.” Let’s two step.
