Three Questions With Dorrough Music x “Highlights” Mixtape

SXSW creates networking opportunities that allow paths to cross that may not under any other circumstances. Case in point would be me bumping into Dorrough Music and chopping it up when he arrived early to shoot in the gym with us on a Saturday morning. What I learned about the young Dallas rapper was that he was as nice as Bun B (as Kanye would say), much different than what would be expected of an artist who’s seen the peak of Billboard’s charts.

Dorrough started telling me about his then-upcoming Highlights project and extended Texas hospitality by inviting me to video shoot he preparing to do later that night. Scheduling constraints prevented us from linking up, but he’d already done enough to make me want to learn more about the tape and how a new artist remains focused in a game that runs through would-be hitmakers like Halloween candy.

TSS: You recently balled with us at Hoop & Hang, dropped a track called “Blake Griffin” (as well as “Number 23? previously) and your career started out with your handing out mixtapes at your high school’s basketball games. Safe to say roundball is your favorite sport? Did you ever play?

Dorrough Music: Yeah, basketball is my favorite sport and I played from age of five on up. Captain of my varsity team, was on varsity since freshman year and could of played college ball but I was too focused on music by then.

TSS: Most people know Dorrough for the Billboard topper, “Ice Cream Paint Job.” Will Highlights enhance people’s perception of your work? What do you attribute your success to?

Dorrough Music: My success comes from consistency, knowledge, humbleness and God. I work extremely hard and the world is about to see my true talent. Highlights is a full project that shows my artistry aside from radio records. I’ve grown and developed a lot since ‘09 and the music speaks for itself and supports this statement. The music is all original and the tape features Wale, Twista, Bun B, Yo Gotti, Ace Hood, Nipsey Hussle, E-40, YG, Maino, Juvenile, Kid Ink, Paul Wall, Shawty Lo, Lil Duval and Yung Nation.

TSS: Does the projects have any surprises that will throw people a curve? Is there one song that you can’t wait for people to hear and see their responses? Is there one track that’s going to floor fans?

Dorrough Music: Yes!! I think the “Pretty Feet” record with Twista will throw people for a loop simply because we touch on a woman topic that no artist has really approached. “Pretty Feet” is essential to the “Dime Process” for women and this record is huge. I can’t wait to hear the response.
