I’m a ridiculous comedy snob. There is almost nothing I hate more than hacky, lazy comedians. I’ve driven this point home by crapping all over Jeff Dunham and Jay Leno in features I’ve written here at Uproxx. Millions of idiot Americans consider these two to be the apex of the comedy scene. This drives me absolutely insane. There is much better, smarter stuff out there than Dunham and his racist puppets, or Leno and his “pick the lowest hanging fruit regardless of taste” style of joke telling.
The Comedy Death Ray Radio podcast (links opens iTunes) is one such avenue for better comedy. The sixty-ish minute show streams live every Friday at 3pm EST on Indie1031.com, with a free download becoming available on iTunes later in the day. Hosted by Scott Aukerman (writer for “Mr. Show,” and co-creator of the Comedy Death Ray showcase, a weekly alternative comedy show at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in Los Angeles), the show usually features 2-3 other stand-up or improv comedians riffing off each other or playing games, often in character. Notable guests include: Nick Kroll, Paul F. Tompkins, Tom Lennon, Patton Oswalt, Zack Galifianakis, and Doug Benson (who hosts his own terrific podcast, “Doug Loves Movies,” also available for free on iTunes).
I can’t stress this enough – this is what comedy could and should be. And don’t let me scare you off with words like “smart” or “alternative” comedy. To give you a little taste, here’s a clip from the show that I uploaded to YouTube. Scott Aukerman and his co-host for the episode, Jon Hamm of “Mad Men,” welcome Nick Kroll in character as El Chupacabra, a Spanish radio DJ. What follows is five minutes of semi-improvised hilarious chaos. Enjoy.
So seriously, go check out the podcast. And if you try it and think to yourself, “Eh, I don’t know, this isn’t really my cup of tea. I actually kind of like Jeff Dunham and his racist puppets. Cultural stereotypes are hilarious,” well then you’re an idiot. Better to find out now.
