A Soccer Referee In Brazil Was Stoned, Quartered & Beheaded By Fans After He Stabbed A Player

In “Stuff that happened a week ago but still gets a HOLY CRAP label” news, a disagreement between a player and a referee during an amateur soccer match in Brazil last Sunday led to the deaths of both men involved. According to ESPN FC, a player named Josenir dos Santos Abreu was upset with referee Otavio Jordao da Silva over a call, and he responded in the most mature and reasonable way possible – he punched the ref.

However, we’d be lucky if that was the worst part of the story. Instead, it got horrifically worse from there, as da Silva pulled out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who, according to Deadspin, died on the way to the hospital as the result of his wounds. It doesn’t stop there, either, as Abreu’s friends and family members watching the game rushed the field and made da Silva pay in a truly terrifying manner.

Having witnessed the incident, an outraged group of spectators turned on the referee. He was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch.

“Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact,” he said. “We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.” (Via Deadspin)

Meanwhile, Deadspin also included a link to an actual video of the referee’s body after the mob had had its way with him, and here’s my thought on that:

But you can feel free to go ahead and check it out, and then let me know how much sleep you lose over it. Because nothing short of a year’s worth of free tacos could make me change my mind.
