Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Go Drinking When It’s Negative-17 Degrees Outside

There are many reasons why you shouldn’t GONE DRINKIN’ when it’s below freezing outside: it takes forever for your car to get warm, you have to wear multiple layers including your blue hoodie with the stain on it that you meant to clean but you haven’t gotten around to it yet, the beer bottle could get stuck to your lips, or you might pass out drunk on your front porch and suffer severe hypothermia and possibly lose your limbs.

That’s what happened to a 19-year-old University of Minnesota-Duluth student. (Makes note to never visit Minnesota.)

A University of Minnesota-Duluth student is in critical condition at Regions Hospital after being found unconscious on her neighbor’s porch in the frigid cold on Saturday morning. [NAME REDACTED], 19, a UMD student from St. Cloud, suffered severe hypothermia and her family has been meeting with a plastic surgeon to discuss skin graft options for their daughter’s injuries sustained in the cold, KQDS-TV reported.

Duluth police arrived at the house on Woodland Avenue on Dec. 7 around 9:36 a.m. after a passerby reported finding a person laying outside unconscious on the porch. The overnight temperature dropped to -17 with wind chill hovering around -36. (Via)

She’s currently in “stable but critical condition,” which is amazing when you consider: “[The student] was dropped off outside her house around midnight and was discovered about 9 hours later, laying on the porch of her neighbor’s house.” Up north, not only do you need a designated driver, you need a designated friend who gets you inside your house so you don’t freeze to death. When this girl recovers, let’s all buy her a plane ticket to Florida.
