Well, for all the controversy surrounding Miley Cyrus’ VMA stunt in which she made an attempt to raise awareness for homeless youth by inviting “homeless” man Jesse Helt — who was first reported to have a loving family back home and subsequently found to be wanted by police — on stage to accept her award, it seems that she’s done a lot of good after all. The New York Times reported that her campaign for the homeless youth nonprofit My Friend’s Place amassed over $200,000 in less than 24 hours following the VMAs, in addition to god knows how much since then.

Although Prizeo, which is hosting the campaign, doesn’t have a running tally of the funds collected — I can only guess that the number has at least quadrupled since Monday, what with the backing of other celebrity endorsers on Twitter and mention from Chelsea Handler during her Tuesday night finale.

Miley, on the other hand, is still pissed about the media outing Jesse Helt:

As I said before, I really do think Miley has her heart in the right place, and compared to other young pop stars it’s nice to see someone in her position actually giving s sh*t. That said, Miley is also recklessly impulsive when it comes to, oh, everything — and you can’t just pluck some random kid out of obscurity and give him a huge platform without even a basic vetting process. Because yes, facts like your poster child being homeless by choice because he’s on the lam? Are definitely going to overshadow your cause. File that under “duh.”
