Napoleon and Antosia have been together for ten years. Together, they have six little ones including a two month old and yet despite that and the rigors of their daily activities at the Poznan Zoo in Poland, the two still find a way to maintain a healthy love life. That is, before officials at the zoo tried to keep these two affectionate donkeys apart.
The two amorous donkeys who were separated because of an outcry over their lovemaking have been reunited at a zoo in Poland.
The couple, together for 10 years, got into trouble when mothers expressed outrage that children had to witness their mating. Local conservative official Lydia Dudziak took up their cause and persuaded the director of the zoo in Poznan to have the animals put in separate pens.
The zoo acknowledged making a mistake Thursday and said the donkeys are again in one pen after about a week apart.
I get that people want to shield their kids, but isn’t it a bit ridiculous and potentially damaging to expect that animals in a zoo won’t behave like animals? It’s not like zoo keepers can put an Xbox in there to drain the zest right out of Napoleon and Antosia’s marriage and did you just hear that rim shot?
Apparently, unbeknownst to them, experts agree with me… not about the Xbox thing, but about the rest.
Experts weighed in, saying that forcing the donkeys to live alone could hurt their psychological wellbeing. Politicians were asked about it on the country’s leading news programs.
“Animals separated by sex into different cages? It’s complete idiocy,” said Stefan Niesiolowski, a lawmaker with the governing party, Civic Platform.
Even the spokesman for Law and Justice, the conservative party that Dudziak belongs to, would not come to her defense.
Can you blame the Law and Justice spokesman? Who wants to court the donkey morality restoration vote? This whole thing is just silly and completely contrary to what a zoo is supposed to be. The wonder of a zoo is in the preservation of some sliver of the animal’s natural habitat so that we can observe them as they were meant to be. Even if, you know…
Look, my point is, I went to a lot of zoos when I was a kid, probably saw some stuff, and I turned out fine. So don’t worry about it and you keep that magic alive Napoleon and Antosia!
