The Commercial For Vladimir Putin’s Annual Media Conference Is More Intense Than Most Movie Trailers

Vladimir Putin is holding his annual media conference tomorrow. It’s an interesting time for the event because the Russian economy is struggling right now, with the value of the ruble and the price of oil both tumbling, and Russian citizens justifiably worried about the country sliding into a recession.

And speaking of things that are interesting, this is the commercial running on Russian state television to promote the conference. It’s… it’s really intense. Really, really intense. Like, “40 seconds of fire and explosions and natural disasters and Russian triumphs in space and ice-based Olympic events, all set to pounding drums and frantic violins” intense. I’ve seen movie trailers for summer blockbusters that were more subtle and nuanced than this. And it is a commercial for a press conference.

My working theory is that Putin is going to announce that he is Iron Man now.
