When it comes to marriage, people in India really mean business. Recently, a bride bailed on her wedding because her bridegroom was unable to answer a math problem. Harsh.

Add 15 and six, she asked him. After he replied with “17”, the whole thing was called off and gifts given by both families were soon taken back. Despite pleads to make amends, the bride refused, calling her hubby-to-be “illiterate.” For the families — who are primarily in charge of arranging the marriages in India — the fall-out was nothing but disappointing.

Mohar Singh [the bride’s father] told the Associated Press news agency that the “groom’s family had kept us in the dark about his poor education”.

“Even a first grader can answer this [the maths test],” he said.

As the BBC notes, the incident echoes a similarly failed Indian wedding earlier this year in which a bride married a guest at her wedding after her bridegroom had a seizure during the ceremony. [Via BBC]
