Italian Chefs Are Pretty Upset At McDonald’s Over An Ad That Mocks Pizza

Which do kids prefer, pizza or burgers? Hardcore pizza devotees will claim the endless cheesiness and toppings are what reign supreme, while burger aficionados will state the portability factor is key. While pizza and burger chains spend billions of dollars every year on advertising, one McDonald’s ad in Italy has pizza makers up in arms.

In the 18-second spot, a young boy says he prefers a happy meal over a tasty pizza pie, and these chefs have simply had it with McDonald’s. According to Express UK:

Massimo Di Porzio, vice president of The True Neapolitan Pizza Association in Naples, said: “We’ve had enough of them making money at the expense of children’s health.

“Our legal team is looking at the possibility of legal action to put an end to this shameful attack on a symbol of the Mediterranean diet.”

“It is not the first time and it will not be the last time that McDonald’s has tried to attack our cultural traditions but this time we are intent on taking action, which if we win, will allow us to invest in courses to help educate children about food.”

It’s easy to understand small restaurant owners being upset because some corporate behemoth is cutting into their business, but saying pizza is a healthy alternative is laughable. It’s literally eating a plate of hot carbs covered in fat and grease (that actually sounds pretty good, though). But if Italy’s kids really do want a happy meal for 4 euros, then the pizza guys better step up their game.
