The reigning World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, played and won three different chess games, and he did it blindfolded.
At the age of 13, Carlsen became a Chess Grandmaster. Six years later, he was ranked number one by the FIDE World Rankings. Now, Carlsen is 24 years old, and at the Sohn Investment Conference, he took on three chess competitors at once to raise money for pediatric cancer research. To up the challenge for Carlsen, he did it blindfolded, a feat that has supposedly never been attempted before:
Carlsen’s opponents were J. Christopher Flowers, a Wall Street financier as well as chairman and founder of J.C. Flowers & Co, Paul Hoffman, the president and CEO of the Liberty Science Center; and actor Gbenga Akinnagbe from The Wire.
The chess virtuoso had to visualize all three boards and moves in his head while time ticked away. The seemingly impossible feat was child’s play for Magnus. He destroyed all three challengers. Plus, his astonishing feat of chess wizardry helped the organization raise over $4 million dollars for the outstanding cause.
The Sohn Investment Conference is over, but the Sohn Conference Foundation is still taking donations here with proceeds helping to research, treat and cure pediatric cancer.
