The Associated Press Is Adding Almost 17,000 Hours Of Archival Footage To YouTube

Throw away that history book, kid — you don’t need it anymore.

If you thought YouTube was one of the greatest inventions already, get prepared to welcome it as one of the best teaching tools ever. The Associated Press — in conjunction with British Movietone — is getting set to unleash 1 million minutes of archival footage dating as far back as 1895. The films contain historical moments like the fall of the Berlin Wall, Pearl Harbor, as well as segments on Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and more. The AP will also continue to add content to the collection going forward.

The news organization cited the popularity of YouTube’s search engine as one of the reasons it decided to add the content, and if filmmakers (or anyone for that matter) want to license the footage, they can do so through AP directly. Also, look for the collection to be monetized at some point with ads as well.
