Court documents from 2005 were released yesterday that included an admission by embattled comedian Bill Cosby that he obtained Quaaludes for the purpose of drugging women he wanted to have sex with. The judge who released those documents, Judge Eduardo C. Robreno, said that when considering leaking them to the Associated Press yesterday, he felt that there were two different Bill Cosbys who existed and the public had a right to know about both of them.

“The stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist and Bill Cosby, the subject of serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct, is a matter as to which the AP — and by extension the public — has a significant interest.”

And the “public moralist” was the man who taught a nation about family values and black America, including the 2004 lecture Cosby gave at Rutgers University to commemorate the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the Supreme Court. This is the lecture that included the now infamous “pound cake” quote about black men being incarcerated and getting shot by police:

“Looking at the incarcerated, these are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake! Then we all run out and are outraged: ‘The cops shouldn’t have shot him.’ What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?”

Meanwhile, Judge Robreno knew that the same man lecturing about black youth misbehaving themselves had been in his court in 2005, admitting to giving Quaaludes to women he wanted to have sex with. And that when asked if the women knew about the ‘ludes, Cosby was told by his attorney not to answer.

So, in light of the recent allegations against Cosby, Judge Robreno decided — after 10 years — that the documents containing the admission should provide some perspective on the kind of person Cosby really is.

Well, an admission that he got Quaaludes for women he wanted to allegedly assault? That’s certainly important. Thank you, Judge Robreno.
