The hero in bringing down Jared Fogle was none other than a 2-year-old black Labrador named Bear, according to a report by NBC News. After police searched Fogle’s residence and found nothing, Bear — one of just five dogs in the United States trained to sniff out electronic data devices — was brought in and was able to locate a hidden flash drive allegedly containing the incriminating materials.

Bear was rescued by dog trainer Todd Jordan, who says that the dogs “are drawn to the smell of chemicals from the device.”

Much the way other dogs can pick up the scent of a fugitive or a cache of cocaine, Bear can smell the components of electronic media, even a micro-card as small as a fingernail that a suspect could easily hide.

“Labs are the best on this,” said Jordan, fending off playful licks from Bear. “They’ll do anything to please their owner.”

Bear was recently purchased by the Seattle Police for $9,500 and Jordan plans to train other dogs to place with police forces around the country for a variety of uses. As if it wasn’t amazing enough that we’ve got dogs sniffing out cancer, soon no one from child molesters to terrorists will be able to hide from the perceptive noses of canines.
