Here’s A Quote From Virginia’s Own Thomas Jefferson Worth Remembering Today, And Every Day

Via Rob Delaney, the following is a quote from U.S. “Founding Father” Thomas Jefferson that’s displayed on the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. It’s probably worth highlighting on days like today when yet another incident of gun violence — this time in Virginia, Jefferson’s home state — has shaken the nation to its core and questions about the 2nd Amendment linger.

“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends, families and colleagues of the people who lost their lives today and may have seen it happen on television or on the internet, as well as the friends, family and colleagues of the countless others who’ve lost their lives due to senseless acts of gun violence in America.
