It’s been weeks since a live segment on a Virginia news telecast turned into a grisly and shocking moment that reverberated throughout the media landscape. WDBJ7 reporter Alison Parker was conducting an interview when Vester Lee Flanagan — a former employee of the station — opened fire on Parker, her cameraman Adam Ward, and the interview subject. Ward and Parker were killed in the incident, and a later pursuit of Flanagan ended when he fatally shot himself. Since the tragedy, Parker’s boyfriend, Chris Hurst — an anchor at the station — has stayed off-air, but on Monday night, he made his return to the desk to provide some comments in the wake of the shootings.

“In the two and a half weeks since their murder,” he said, “I can tell you the healing has begun.”

Hurst went on to explain the impact of Parker and Ward’s death.

“Alison and Adam projected a love and peace into our world that can never be taken, even if they were taken from us. She and I fell in love here in the newsroom, as we fondly watched each other care deeply about our communities and try to make them better, and safer. That’s what drove her as she came into your home every morning.”

Since the murders, Hurst has been on CNN and other news outlets to help propel the anti-gun violence movement. Before his return to the anchor’s position on Monday night, he posted this photo on his Twitter.
