This Model Lashed Out After Receiving Too Few Instagram ‘Likes,’ And The Internet Was Not Kind

Putting oneself out there on social media — whether on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram — arrives with risks that are ever-so slight. Approval or rejection can arrive on any given photo or status update. Cassi Van Den Dungen (who competed on Australia’s Next Top Model and has covered international issues of Elle) has newly learned the stinging pain of social-media rejection. Cassi tossed up a farewell vacation message as she departed for a road trip. She continued on her merry way and, presumably, enjoyed herself quite a bit. Then Cassi came home to see that her inspirational message did not gather up many likes. So, she lashed out through an Instagram caption.

Cassi did not reward her followers with any vacation photos because “my post on new adventures had only 14 likes,” which is “the lowest amount I’ve ever had on Instagram.” She explains that she was “pretty shocked” because her followers “don’t like having fun,” and “YOU ALL SUCK!!!!!” All of this was a slight overreaction and perhaps a sign that people place too much value upon social-media approval when — ultimately — no one pays attention to anyone’s “like” count but their own.

In response, Cassi was rewarded with nearly two thousand “likes” for her protest photo, but she also received over a thousand negative comments like these. The internet is not impressed.
