A Centuries-Old Mummy Was Just Discovered Inside This Buddha Statue

This week, employees at Netherlands’ Drents Museum made an astonishing discovery regarding one of their exhibited Buddha statues: Hidden inside was the mummified body of a monk. Sounds like someone took “rest in peace” quite literally.

A CT scan and endoscopy performed by Meander Medical Center revealed that the remains were those of Buddhist master Liuquan of the Chinese Meditation School, who died around 1100 AD. Further investigation by the hospital turned up “paper scraps that were printed with ancient Chinese characters” where his organs were supposed to be.

The statue (with mummy) is currently on display at the Hungarian Natural History Museum until May.
