The most coveted high school basketball player in recent history made his decision today. Four schools – Florida State, Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina – were considered to be the top candidates to land Andrew Wiggins. And, in the end, the 6’8″ Canadian forward chose the Kansas Jayhawks as his collegiate home.
Unlike what’s become typical for today’s star athletes, Huntington Prep (W.Va.) standout opted against a flock of TV cameras and reporters around for the announcement. Instead, the player had a small signing ceremony that consisted of family, friends and one lone reporter, Grant Traylor of the local Herald-Dispatch.
“Wiggins made the announcement during a 12:15 p.m. ceremony at St. Joseph Central Catholic School in front of a small group of classmates, family and close friends.
“His mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, and father, Mitchell Wiggins, were both in attendance for the ceremony.
“The announcement ends a recruiting process which has been the center of attention in the basketball world since Wiggins reclassified to the Class of 2013 in late October.”
And so it goes. Jayhawk fans, here’s a dose of what Wiggins will be bringing to the program on a nightly basis…for at least one year. But given the way Wiggins handled today, he may spurn going the one-and-done, easy route to the NBA that so many other big name recruits have chosen before him.
